Development Options Not all web-based training should be the same. Anyone who tells you otherwise is just trying to sell you services you may not need. Before you create a web course it needs to be evaluated carefully. Who is the audience? How big is the audience? Are they mostly college educated or just out of high school? What global region will make up the primary audience? Are they technical or creative? These are just some of the questions that need to be answered. Once you know your audience you can then make a decision on the type of development you want. Like many companies, we take the pyramid approach to development.
Rapid Development This approach is at the bottom of the pyramid. It makes the most sense for small audiences or for classes that change often. These courses cost the least and have a simpler look and feel, but can make perfect sense for many situations. Normal Development This is the standard approach to web-based training. It combines all the benefits of curriculum development with animation, interactivity, scenarios, professional audio, and more. While the costs can be a little more than rapid development, this option should be chosen whenever the budget allows because this option will deliver the greatest ROI. Custom Development This option should be reserved only for those special courses that most of your organization will take or that teach a highly technical skill. When we hear the complaint that web-based training is too expensive, it’s typically because only this type of development is being sold. It can definitely be a good choice, but more often than not normal or rapid development will work just as well, if not better.
