Flight Operations and Company Manuals Edition

Overview

The TechSight/X® Flight Operations and Company Manual Edition provides solutions for AOM, MEL, and all internal general procedures manuals including regulatory (ATOS/IOSA) compliance management and reporting.

  • The Flight Operations and Company Manual Edition supports ATOS, IOSA, and CAR regulatory requirements management, Flight Operations Manual, and General Company Manual authoring, management and control.
  • The Flight Operations and Company Manual Edition supports the following document types:
    • AOM/FCOM
    • MEL/CDL
    • Airbook

Capitalized on successful product and service offerings for Tech Pubs management, InfoTrust has taken up the challenge of offering comprehensive solutions for the Flight Operations as well, starting in the early part of this decade. InfoTrust’s solutions target the management of the three groups of publications: procedure manuals, MEL/CDL, and FCOM, covering both Airbus and Boeing fleets. Continuing with the strong tradition of digitization of content and processes in the Tech Pubs arena governed by the ATA standards, InfoTrust has taken the initiative of building comprehensive, flexible, and extendible doctypes in XML either from scratch or by extending OEM DTDs on their own in the absence of established industry standards for Flight Operations content. These doctypes, combined with InfoTrust’s end-to-end process, content, authoring and publishing management products, and conversion and implementation services, make up InfoTrust’s solutions for Flight Operations publication management.

Each Flight Operation publication type have the benefit of the following solution features:

  • DocType involving a specific DTD, corresponding authoring style sheets, end-user style sheets for PDF and HTML, and guided authoring customizations to provide seamless authoring in XML for non-XML authors
  • Content management library functions such as check in and check out of parts of the publication, versioning, content preview, search, etc.
  • Business process automation functionality, including change/request incorporation management, workflow/routing, change forms, change tracking/incorporation status reports, and publication management trend reports
  • Conversion of Microsoft Word, FrameMaker, and Interleaf legacy manuals to XML

Below are additional features and benefits.

Company/Procedure Manuals

The Airbook DTD is designed as a general doctype, capable of providing a structured authoring environment for a wide range of documents. By using one doctype across a wide range of documents customers are able to reuse and repurpose resources across the organization.

The basic components of Airbook will be familiar to anyone who has worked with any of the standard ATA Spec 2200 document types; but Airbook can be extended as required to meet the customer’s specific requirements.

The flexibility of AirBook allows it to be applied to just about every type of internally authored manual. The following is a partial list of some of the documents that can be deployed using AirBook:

  • Flight Operations Training Manual
  • Safety Manual
  • Security Manual
  • Ground Operations Manual
  • In-Flight Training Manual
  • Flight Operations Manual
  • Maintenance Procedures Manual
  • GOM
  • QRH
  • OCM
  • EOM
  • FOQA
  • FAM
  • Flight Performance and Planning Manual
  • Manufacturer's Weight and Balance Manual
  • GMM
  • Maintenance Inspection Procedures Manual
  • QAM
  • AGSM
  • ROM
  • Weight and Balance ALM
  • HZM
  • FLM
  • DIM

Extending Airbook for ATOS

Airbook has been extended to accommodate specialized types of data. For example; during a recent project a customer needed to embed ATOS SAI and SRR references directly into their data.

By allowing the author to embed the reference at any point in the document, ATOS inspectors were able to quickly locate the precise point at which a particular SAI question was answered.

Since all of the data was authored in XML using Airbook DTD, it was possible to generate indexes and cross references, creating a set of interlinked HTML documents that allowed the FAA inspectors to navigate a complete set of documents from an ATOS-centric perspective. This same XML tagging technology and process can also be utilized for IOSA compliance management.

Converting Documents to the Airbook Doctype:

Documents can be converted to Airbook from a number of different sources. InfoTrust currently has tools and processes for converting Word documents, Interleaf, Frame Maker, SGML, HTML, XML, PDF and paper. Conversion to Airbook from other source types may be possible as well.

  • All company/procedure manuals are handled by InfoTrust-developed AirBook doctype. In the absence of any established standard, InfoTrust has used ATA standard constructs for this doctype as much as possible, in order to use existing libraries and strategies familiar to aviation organizations.
  • AirBook doctype features ATOS compliance tagging and compliancy reporting, which allows authors to cite particular ATOS policies within any procedure in any company manuals, which in turn allows for push-button generation of ATOS compliance reporting on published procedures manuals.
  • While all procedure manuals can be accommodated by the same AirBook DTD, they can have different customer output layouts serving different distribution targets.
  • TechSight/X IETP and EFB viewers provide enhanced means of delivering the HTML and PDF documents for electronic consumption. PDF layout is also optimized for paper distribution. Customers choose one or more of delivery options.
  • TechSight/X BPM can be integrated with the TechSight/X CMS authoring and repository management products and TechSight/X IETP and EFB IETP viewers to provide an end-to-end solution for the AirBook doctype, for complete company/procedure manual management.
  • TechSight/X CMS authoring for AirBook doctype supports two third-party XML authoring applications: XMetal and Arbortext Epic.

MEL/CDL

  • MEL and CDL for all fleets are handled by the InfoTrust-developed MEL/CDL doctype. In the absence of any established standard, InfoTrust has used ATA standard constructs for this doctype as much as possible, in order to use existing libraries and strategies familiar to aviation organizations.
  • While both MEL and CDL can be accommodated by the same DTD, different output styling allows them to be published separately as distinct manuals. Also there are a variety of choices in displaying MEL, especially for paper output. InfoTrust can provide a great degree of fidelity as custom output options to customer’s legacy paper formats
  • TechSight/X IETP and EFB IETP viewers provide enhanced means of delivering the HTML/PDF formats for electronic consumption. PDF layout is also optimized for paper distribution. Various customers choose one or more of delivery options
  • ITechSight/X BPM can be integrated with TechSight/X CMS authoring and repository management products and TechSight/X IETP and EFB IETP viewers to provide an end-to-end solution for the MEL/CDL doctype, for complete MEL/CDL publications management.
  • TechSight/X CMS authoring for MEL/CDL doctype support two third-party XML authoring applications: XMetal and Arbortext Epic.

FCOM

  • Currently FCOM for all fleets is handled by the InfoTrust-developed FCOM doctype. In the absence of any established standard, InfoTrust has used ATA-standard constructs for this doctype as much as possible order to use existing libraries and strategies familiar to aviation organizations. During the development process, InfoTrust analyzed all variations of FCOM data and DTDs from Boeing and Airbus for the legacy fleets to accommodate all constructs comfortably.
  • The InfoTrust FCOM doctype and publishing features are able to accommodate various volume and multiple output requirements for regulatory agencies around the globe for the same FCOM content.
  • InfoTrust’s solution involves data transformation scripts that automatically convert from various SGML/XML data to InfoTrust FCOM and vice versa. Because OEM legacy DTDs are page oriented they are not suitable for fully automated revision conflict management, unlike Tech Pubs DTDs. However, ITG provides facilitation for authors and publication coordinators to incorporate relevant OEM changes within the constructs of InfoTrust solution’s BPM by providing side-by-side comparisons of content and automating change request management based on the list of effected pages that comes with the latest version of the OEM manual.
  • TechSight/X IETP and EFB viewers provide enhanced means of delivering HTML and PDF documents for electronic consumption. PDF layout is also optimized for paper distribution. Customers can choose one or more delivery options.
  • TechSight/X BPM can be integrated with TechSight/X CMS authoring and repository management products and TechSight/X IETP and EFB to provide an end-to-end solution for the FCOM doctype, for complete FCOM publications management.
  • TechSight/X CMS authoring for FCOM doctype support two third-party XML authoring applications: XMetal and Arbortext Epic.
